Innovation

VanWyn develops new technologies when existing solutions cannot adequately solve a client's problem.


Our work has included projects supported by the Canadian Department of National Defence, NATO, and Mitacs, spanning defence, communications, aerospace, and emerging technologies.


These projects complement our Executive Advisory practice by providing firsthand experience in developing technologies from concept through validation.


Whether advising executives or developing new technologies, our approach is the same: understand the underlying problem, question assumptions, and design practical solutions that create lasting strategic advantage.

Untethered High-Altitude Aerostat (UHAA)

The UHAA is a high-altitude platform designed to remain stationary in the stratosphere for months to years, while carrying communications, surveillance, or scientific payloads.


The platform combines several mature technologies into a novel craft that provides capabilities which satellites, drones, and tethered balloons cannot offer.


It offers new approaches to persistent communications, Arctic surveillance, emergency connectivity, and other applications where long-duration, high-altitude operation could dramatically reduce cost and complexity.


The project has been supported by the Canadian Department of National Defence and several university collaborations in Canada and the United States.


UHAA answers the question:

"How do we make high-altitude operations cheaper, faster, easier, less risky, and better defended?"

NARROWAVE

The VanWyn NARROWAVE is a wireless communications technology developed to address a fundamental limitation of conventional radio systems: signals that broadcast in all directions can be detected, potentially exposing the location of people, vehicles, or critical infrastructure.


The technology combines the advantages of radio and laser communications by transmitting data in a highly focused beam that remains effective in real-world atmospheric conditions. The result is a communications platform designed to improve privacy, security, bandwidth, and resilience for defence, government, and commercial applications.


The project has been supported through initiatives involving the Canadian Department of National Defence, NATO DIANA, Mitacs, and collaborations with Canadian and American universities and industry partners.


NARROWAVE answers the question:

"How do we communicate without exposing position, movements, or intentions?"
